The following article details the VersaTag integrations that are available with point solution tag management systems.

If the tag management system you would like to integrate is not on this list, please contact your Sizmek client services manager.

Lightning Bolt

VersaTags can be piggybacked onto the Xaxis Lightning Bolt Tag Manager.

To use VersaTag with Lightning Bolt Tag Manager:

  1. Create any necessary custom variables for the advertiser.
  2. Configure and generate the VersaTag code.
  3. Copy and paste the VersaTag into Lightning Bolt.
  4. Create your mapping rules. All URLs should have prepended to the URL supplied by the agency, and have a wildcard after the .html.

This setup will work without any additional modification.

Note: Flash-based conversions are not supported.

Tealium has integrated VersaTag into its tag library, and supports both simple and advanced implementations.

To use VersaTag with Tealium:

  1. Create any necessary custom variables for the advertiser.
  2. Configure and generate the VersaTag code.
  3. Send the VersaTag ID number to the agency/Tealium account user.
  4. The Tealium user will create new VersaTag, and will need to associate the VersaTag with all relevant pages, and map any custom variables in Tealium to the correct VersaTag custom parameters.
  5. In VersaTag, the agency can then create the necessary mapping rules.

Signal (formerly BrightTag)

Simple VersaTag implementations can be integrated with Signal (formerly BrightTag).

To use VersaTag with Signal:

1. Configure and generate the VersaTag code.

2. Send the VersaTag code to the Signal administrator.

3. Instruct the Signal administrator to have VersaTag fire on all pages of the advertiser’s site.

4. The agency user or a Sizmek client service manager can then create the necessary mapping rules.

  • Flash-based conversions are not supported.
  • Support for custom variables has not yet been tested.

Google Tag Manager (GTM)

Configure and Implement VersaTag with GTM

VersaTags can be integrated with GTM. Follow these steps to use VersaTag with GTM:

  1. Sizmek client services manager configures and generates the VersaTag code in Sizmek MDX.
  2. Sizmek client services manager send the VersaTag code to the GTM administrator.
  3. In the GTM, the administrator opens the account and creates a new tag.
  4. The administrator names the tag VersaTag and selects Custom HTML for the tag type.
  5. The administrator pastes the VersaTag code, provided by Sizmek, into the HTML box.
  6. The administrator selects the Support document.write check box.
  7. The administrator selects the default All Pages trigger in the Triggering section.

Advanced Scenarios

You can pass variables to VersaTag to use for sales tags and dynamic retargeting tags.

  1. Administrator creates a new User-Defined Variable for each parameter to be collected.
    1. Give the variable a name.
    2. Select a variable type (either Data Layer Variable or JavaScript Variable) and set the data layer or global variable name.
  2. Reference this user-defined variable by name in the appropriate parameter portion of the VersaTag code using the following syntax:

  3. Follow the steps under Configure and Implement VersaTag with GTM steps.

Fire VersaTag onClicks and Buttons within GTM

  1. In GTM, administrator creates a User-Defined Variable.
    1. Give the variable a name.
    2. Select the Auto-Event Variable as the variable type.
    3. Select Element ID from the Variable Type list, and select SAVE.
  2. In GTM, administrator creates a new tag.
    1. Name the Tag VT_generateRequest and choose Custom HTML as tag type.
    2. Paste the following into the HTML box, replacing with the site domain (for example,

      <script> versaTagObj.generateRequest("{{elementID}}"); </script>

  3. Under Advanced Settings and Tag Sequencing
    1. Select Fire a tag before VT_generateRequest fires and select VersaTag as the setup tag.
    2. Select Don’t fire VT_generateRequest if VersaTag fails
      This will ensure that VT_generateRequest only fires after VersaTag has successfully fired.
  4. Add triggers to initiate the firing of the VT_generateRequest tag, commonly on user clicks:
    1. Add a new trigger using All Elements type.
    2. Select Some Clicks.
    3. Define firing conditions based on the elementID variable and select SAVE.

Adobe Dynamic Tag Manager

VersaTag can be used with Adobe Dynamic Tag manager.

  1. Sizmek CSM configures and generates the VersaTag code. The code to be implemented in the Adobe DTM platform should use body.append and the VersaTag code needs to be enclosed inside it.

    This is a sample of a basic VersaTag code as it should be implemented in DTM. (Note that should be replaced by the relevant ID from the Sizmek platform.):

    Secure/Non-secure version:

    var versaTag = {}; = "1234";
    versaTag.sync = 0;
    versaTag.dispType = "js";
    versaTag.ptcl = "HTTPS";
    versaTag.bsUrl = "";
    versaTag.activityParams = {"OrderID":"","Value":"","productid":"","productinfo":"","Quantity":""};
    versaTag.retargetParams = {};
    versaTag.dynamicRetargetParams = {};
    versaTag.conditionalParams = {};
    var ebprotocol = window.location.protocol=="https:"?"https://secure-":"http://";
    var onetagscript = document.createElement('script');
    onetagscript.src = ebprotocol+""; = "ebOneTagUrlId";
    window.versaTag = versaTag;
  2. Sizmek CSM sends the VersaTag code to the Adobe DTM administrator.
  3. In DTM, administrator opens the account and creates a new Page Load rule.
  4. If VersaTag requires activity parameters, these can be mapped by using the metadata setting.
  5. Under conditions, set VersaTag rule to trigger at bottom of page.
  6. For Rule Conditions, leave this empty so VersaTag will always fire without condition.
  7. In the Javascript/Third Party Tags section, select the Non-sequential Javascript option.
  8. Click Add new script and paste the code from step 1.
  9. Name the Tag VersaTag and save.
  10. If your DTM has any approvals, please make sure the VersaTag is fully approved and published to live status.
  11. Make sure VersaTag is not included in any DTM rule groups that are scheduled for only specific times/dates.
