With 35 reporting metrics available for video campaigns, Sizmek understands the importance of measuring campaign success. We believe that campaign analysis should be straightforward, and we strive to eliminate the confusion with clearly defined metrics that allow for easy, yet comprehensive, campaign evaluation.

In-stream advertising involves serving ads in a video player or in conjunction with video player content. Sizmek provides an in-stream advertising solution based on IAB standards and offers products that allows serving two major types of in-stream ads:

  • Video ads: Ads with content that consists of video playback only.
  • Interactive ads: Ads that have elements with which users can interact. Interactive ads may or may not include video ad content.

IAB developed two standards for serving in-stream ads, namely VAST (Video Ad Serving Template) and VPAID (Video Player-Ad Interface Definition). Metrics are reported differently by VAST and VPAID ads.

  • For in-stream video ads, the Sizmek VAST tag provides a video asset address and a full set of tracker URLs. The publisher player is responsible for establishing video playback and reporting trackers to Sizmek servers.



  • For in-stream interactive video ads (VPAID ads), the Sizmek tag contains the address of an interactive ad file or application (not video) and only a subset of trackers. More specifically, a VAST tag with VPAID ads does not provide Sizmek video trackers data. Players do not report video trackers; the Sizmek creative includes an internal facility to establish primary video playback and report video interactions.



Metric: Impression

In-stream Video (VAST) Ad Format

Impressions are only counted once, regardless of the number of components. For example, a non-linear ad may be selected to initiate a linear component, and in this case, the platform counts the impression when the non-linear portion displays.

Impression is reported when the first frame of the video displays and coincides with the video start.

In-stream Interactive Video (VPAID) Ad Format

Impressions are only counted once, regardless of the number of components.  For example, a non-linear ad may be selected to initiate a linear component, and in this case, the platform counts the impression when the non-linear portion displays.

In VPAID ads, the creative (Sizmek Flash or HTML5) dispatches VPAID AdImpression events.

The player must subscribe to the AdImpression event, and is responsible for reporting the Impression tracker (provided by Sizmek) to the Sizmek server.

Based on IAB guidelines, Sizmek triggers the AdImpression event as soon as the creative becomes visible (first frame of the Flash or HTML5) in the player. An AdImpression event is dispatched regardless of the video playback within the Ad Creative.

If video is present in the ad, AdImpression is always reported before video start interaction.

Metric: Video Start

In-stream Video (VAST) Ad Format

Video Start is tracked when first video frame is rendered in the player. Video start and impression reporting coincide.

In-stream Interactive Video (VPAID) Ad Format

Video Start is reported as Sizmek interaction when first video frame is rendered in creative. If the ad does not have a video, the ad does not report the video start interaction. 

Regardless of the number of videos in an ad, a Sizmek ad dispatches VPAID video events only for the first video that starts in the ad.

An ad reports Sizmek video start interaction and dispatches VPAID AdVideoStart event only once - the first time video starts.

Sizmek ad dispatches a VPAID AdVideoStart event to the player when the first video starts. In response to an AdVideoStart event, the publisher player may report the corresponding metric to a publisher or 3rd party server.

Metric: Ad Start

In-stream Video (VAST) Ad Format

Ad Start metric is not specified by IAB for in-stream video ads.

In-stream Interactive Video (VPAID) Ad Format

Ad Start is reported at the same time as an AdImpression event is dispatched, when an ad is placed on stage and becomes visible to user. It is tracked for linear ads only.

Sizmek controls interaction reporting time.

Ad Start is only reported when viewability measurement is enabled.

Metric: Creative View

In-stream Video (VAST) Ad Format

For linear elements of the ad, Creative View is tracked from the first frame of the video and coincides with the video start.

For non-linear and companion elements, Creative View is tracked from the first frame of the creative. These trackers are reported by the player to the Sizmek server.

Sizmek system tracks Creative View as a custom interaction and not as one of the standard system interactions.

Creative View could be fired multiple times or once for each video element (for example, once for linear and once for the companion ad).

In-stream Interactive Video (VPAID) Ad Format

For linear elements of the ad, Creative View is tracked at the same time as AdImpression and Ad Start are reported.

For non-linear and companion elements that are Flash or HTML5 (as opposed to image), Creative View is tracked from the first frame of the creative. The ad reports these elements.

Sizmek tracks the creative view as a custom interaction and not as one of the standard system interactions.
