Starting March 1, 2016 AOL will be taking over ad serving on Microsoft properties for the following eight markets: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Brazil. Not all AOL formats are certified to run on MSN. Please reference the MSN Rich Media Formats Build Guide page for a list of supported formats.

HTML5 Formats' Guidelines

  • Use default custom template ad variable settings except for the ones listed below by format
  • Method of expansion and contraction must be the same (i.e., mouse-over or user-click, not a combination of functionality) Subsequent expansions 'replays ' may be initiated upon User Click everywhere. Expansion by User Mouse-Over is not permitted on Homepages (e.g., AOL Homepages, AOL.com, etc) and Mail Inbox (AOL Client Service & Webmail).
  • Audio: User initiated on click or mouse-over. Mouse-over audio may only start after a one second delay and must stop upon mouse-off.
  • Auto Play Video (video started on ad load without user interaction): Non UI video should have sound muted by default.
  • User-Initiated Video: Video Controls must be present: Play/Pause, Volume Control or Mute/Unmute buttons are required. Time Scrubber & Replay button are suggested but not required.
  • Make sure all clickthroughs including default have “Close Ad Parts” unchecked
  • All click through urls must open in a new browser window.
  • Do NOT specify the full URL path of custom scripts and just use the script name. This will allow the scripts to serve securely when the placement is set to secure.
  • If sending secure (HTTPS) tags, the developer will need to make sure the path of the EBLoader.js file is either dynamic or secure, depending on implementation.
  • The Responsive Billboard and Responsive Header use the same custom format. Different Ad Variable settings are used to alter their behavior. Refer to the specific details below and review the Settings Guide at the bottom of this page for more information.
  • Viewability is currently not supported in Billboard and Custom Header formats.

See creative guidelines here.

  • Auto and User Expand states: This can currently be done by checking if the mdShouldAutoExpand custom variable is true and hiding and showing the user or auto expand content in the panel as needed.
  • Include $("#autoVideo")[0].play(); code only once the ad is fully expanded to ensure video auto plays (workaround due to issues in Chrome)
  • If Mobile - Update the script.js file and add following code: videoWall.getElementsByTagName("video")[0].setAttribute("controls","true");
  • Ex. http://screencast.com/t/QgOgrenbcK
  • CSS Animation Delay update to 0, details below
  • Expand panel should be set to “Page Relative-Percentage” with X,Y coordinates set to 50,50.

CSS Animation Delay Fix (for Chrome) -
Need to set the animation delay for the lightbox to 0 seconds in panel/videowall/styles/style.css:

  -webkit-animation-delay: 0s;

AOL Responsive Header Demo

Refer to the Settings Guide document in "Downloads" for difference between AOL and MSN Responsive Billboard settings.

Notes:
  • Please read the build template build guide available on the Showcase to understand the custom script and ad variable requirements
  • When the AOL page is resized in the browser, the ad will disappear until the page is refreshed. This is by page design and is not a problem with the ad. This does NOT occur on MSN.
  • Use the "Multi" templates to use different creatives at different snap points. Use the "Single" templates to create only one size that will be scaled
  • The ad variables below show the required values for serving on AOL. All other ad variables not listed below but are part of the template should use the default values
  • Serves as a 1x1 banner. The default image is a 768x250 image in the workspace.
  • Check build guide for information on default image setup
  • The Leave-behind should contain branded assets and can also include animation if desired and will retain a height of 66 pixels regardless of width
  • Make sure all clickthroughs including default have “Close Ad Parts” unchecked
  • Make sure “Auto Expand Default Panel when Ad is Loaded” is NOT checked.

Configuring in Platform

  1. In the Sizmek platform, open an Ad, go to the Setup tab.
  2. Select the Advanced Features section, and expand the Custom JS section
  3. Cut and paste the required scripts into the text field labeled “Trigger JavaScript on Scripts Pre-load”
  4. Only use the script file name. The full path should not be used so that the platform can serve it through https.
  5. Multiple scripts can be added by separating each script with a semi-colon.
  6. When you are done, click the Save button.

Note: When using only the file name the Test URL button will not work. This is a platform issue and does not indicate there is an problem with the script.

Flash Format Support

Ads built to run on MSFT should default to HTML5, but if there is a situation in which Flash is required please reach out to AOLSupport@sizmek.com for additional build information.
